My final thesis for Parsons School of Design is an animation that explores how to visualize the abstract ideas of quantum mechanics, juxtaposing the classical and quantum worlds. Through a visual narrative of these two realms, the film considers how future technologies, including quantum technologies, could expand our understanding while challenging how we see the world and search for meaning.


Takeaway
My final thesis taught me how visual storytelling can make abstract ideas easier to engage with. The central challenge was finding ways to represent quantum mechanics visually. Experimenting across disciplines helped me develop a visual language: before choosing animation, I explored printmaking, coding, and fashion design to approach the subject from different perspectives.

This project reinforced my belief that design can help us ask difficult questions, communicate complex ideas, and approach the unknown with curiosity and humility.

Concept Statement
“Dissolution” invites viewers to consider the nature of reality, the limits of human understanding, and the search for meaning in a world where classical and quantum realities seem to overlap. The film explores the implications of scientific progress and the role we play in making sense of our experiences as our understanding of quantum mechanics develops.

Design Challenge
The main challenge was finding a visually compelling way to represent a topic as abstract and complex as quantum mechanics. I experimented with printmaking, simulating quantum circuits, creating blur effects with code, and applying quantum concepts to fashion. I chose animation because it allowed me to bring these experiments together in a visual narrative.

Analogy
I used a journey through a wormhole as an analogy for how our sense of reality can become blurred when we enter unfamiliar territory. The imagined distortion of space-time mirrors the uncertainty that can arise as we try to understand the quantum world.
This analogy suggests approaching the unknown with humility and openness, recognizing that there is always more to learn.
